Rolls Royce diesel generators to supply back-up power to Hinkley Point C

Rolls Royce is supplying multiple MTU diesel generators to provide back-up power to the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. Rolls-Royce is using its broad in-house capability to deliver four generator sets; all instrumentation and controls; and full systems integration. This contract sits alongside another for the provision of Hinkley Point C heat exchangers and associated systems, which was agreed in December 2017.

The diesel generators are supplied from Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems; instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems from its Grenoble-based I&C business; and systems integration engineering from its Warrington and Derby-based nuclear teams.

The back-up, diesel generator systems, with 3600 kW power output each, will guarantee power to critical power station systems in the event of any unplanned outage of the site’s standing power supply.

Hinkley Point C supply chain director, Jean-Pierre West, said: “These diesel generators are an essential part of the multiple safety systems incorporated into the Hinkley Point C design and they will play a critical role in helping the power station provide safe and reliable low carbon electricity for decades to come.”

Each Rolls Royce diesel generator set includes all the auxiliary systems, tanks, coolers, exhaust and air intake systems, pumps, pipework, valves, starting systems, lubricating and fuel oil systems as well as the electrical power generator and all the instrumentation and control systems.

The first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK in over 20 years, full construction at Hinkley Point C got underway after EDF, its Chinese partner, CGN, and the UK Government, signed final contracts in September 2016.  The power station will supply the UK with reliable low carbon electricity to meet 7% of the country’s needs. The project is mobilised for an objective of initial delivery for unit 1 at the end of 2025.
